The drawing of the 199 steps has been a project that I had been wanting to create since moving to Whitby in 2017. The inspiration was from our holidays to the town, a determination to complete the climb with the reward of visiting the Brewery at the end of it. We stayed at one point in a holiday Cottage who’s large lounge window looked out directly onto the steps and, accompanied with a glass of wine (there seems to be a theme occurring here), we would ‘people watch’ before venturing out later in the evening. The variety of people, pets, dress and means of ascending and descending the steps was quite staggering (for some quite literally so) and I started to sketch and photograph in some detail before starting to put pencil to paper on a 1.4 metre x 38cm drawing. After the usual ups and downs of creating a piece of work I finally completed it in late 2019…..it then sat rolled up in an art tube whilst I tussled with deciding what to do with it……….the COVID hit!
